Loss of acceleration at 35mph

Hello all,

This my first time posting and hoping to get help with a diagnosis from the many insightful members of this forum where I typically find the answers to my fix’s from existing threads & posts.

My 1999 F150 (4.6 2wd Automatic) just recently began to slip or not engage into gear (3rd I think). It drives normal in reverse and up until it reaches 35 mph when it then it feels like i am driving in neutral, where my RPM's rev up when given gas and there is no acceleration until the truck slows enough (about 15-20mph) to get back into previous gear.

Engine light came on about an hour before this started happening and had it read at AutoZone after the slipping began. The code read I was misfiring on #1, so I changed plug and wire but that didn't change anythingl. (CE light is no longer on though)

Thoughts on this being strictly a transmission problem and only a coincidence with the CE light: bank 1 misfiring (could that even cause of the feeling of the gear slipping/missing described above?)

- Is it worth trying to replace the passenger side coil pack since wire and plug already changed?

Other info:
- Trans fluid level is full and clean. (Changed 10/09)
- Had an alignment the day before this started (another coincidence?)
- 4 months ago cleaned TB, IAC, EGR, and changed DLPF sensor in effort to fix hesitation/acceleration problems i was having at about 45mph. (this helped significantly but still felt it at times).

Thank you in advance
Jeff

Did the OD Off light flash? If so, there's a tranny code stored and you need a high end scanner to read it. However, this sounds more like a transmission internal issue.

About the OD Light, no I didn't notice the light flash. The trans shop said they did run a scan and found no codes.

Thanks glc.

I took it to the shop today and I they called me saying they discovered a spring had come loose near one of the pistons and fortunately doesn't look like it will need to be a rebuild. They called while in a work meeting and I couldn’t really talk, thus the vague info. However, I am heading to the shop this evening to see what a $350 "spring replacement" job looks like before I give them the go-ahead.

Do you (or anyone else) know what and where this "spring" repair could be?

thanks

** Here is the update to my transmission problem and perhaps saving some $$ to anyone having similar problems. **
It turns out it was the Acumalator 2-3 piston and spring that needed to be replaced. After forking over $380 to the shop for the repair I browsed this site and found some informative postings and discovered it might not be too tough of a repair to take on yourself.

here are some of the links I think could have saved me some dough!

hopefully this helps someone else experiencing the same problems.

thanks
Jeff

The upside is you found what seems to be an honest transmission repair shop. A large number of them would have said you needed a complete rebuild and charged you accordingly. $380.00 bucks seems a little steep right now but really they charge around $100.00 bucks an hour so if I guesstimate it was two hours to find the problem and 1 hour to fix and the rest is parts that is not too bad. $380.00 vs $2000.00 to $3000.00 is a win all day long in my book.
