squeaking noise until clutch is depressed

I have a 98 F150 4X4 with a manual tranny and a 4.6L. Several months ago, I posted a thread asking you all if doing a clutch job would be too big of a job for me and the information I got was great.

The problem I was having was a shrill squeaking noise coming from the bell housing that GOES AWAY WHEN I DEPRESS THE CLUTCH just a fraction of an inch. My mechanic told me it was the throwout bearing and suggested a complete clutch job--flywheel, slave and master cylinders, etc.--big money.

Then the noise went away and I quit worrying. It's back now.

From what I've read, a throwout bearing would squeak when the clutch is depressed, not the opposite.

Any truck doctors want to give me a diagnosis?

Thanks so much.

If it's not the throwout bearing, it's the pilot bearing. Regardless, if you have to tear into it that far you might as well do a full clutch job.
