Question no reverse / no second gear

4R70W tranny in 4.6L 2000 Expedition has no reverse and shifts from 1st to 3rd then slips to neutral with the O/D on. Will run normally with O/D off at about 45-50 mph. Fluid and filter are up to date. Any help is appreciated. Also please let me know if this is something I may be able to diagnose and repair myself or would be better off taking it to a pro. Thanks.

Unfortunately this is rebuild it territory that you are in. I am betting that at least the reverse sun shell is broken.

Man, it is so hard to say on local pricing. That can be all over the place. I have heard prices as low as less than a thousand, which is stupid because I know what it takes to do this right, to over $3k for a stock rebuild.

If you can get a brand new transmission from a Ford dealer as a replacement then I will give you another brand new transmission.

The reason I say that is because there is no such thing as a new transmission that you can ger from a Ford dealer to replace a broken used one. All of them are remanufactured unless they come in a brand new vehicle. This has been talked about a whole lot on here and people who actually work or have worked for Ford have verified that the only way you are going to get a brand new transmission from a Ford dealer is in a brand new vehicle.

Now, the service people will often tell you that it's a "new" transmission and I suspect that you need to loosely take that as meaning 'new to you' instead of truly and honestly new. Cause trust me, it isn't really brand new. Kind of like when you buy a 'new' car for yourself and that car is anything other than truly a brand new car from a dealer. For instance someone might go out today and get a 'new to them' 04 F-150.

My opinion on the Ford reman units are that they are about as good as going to a reputable local shop and having one rebuilt properly. The difference is that Ford gives a hell of a warranty on theirs and I think that you can get the work done at any Ford dealership when you need to use that warranty.

umm..ok,

about 2.5 years ago when i went in there because i was having troubles with my transmission thats what they told me, they said "we cant figure out whats wrong, but we can rebuild it for 1500 or get you a new one for 3200" i said ok ill pay for the diagnostics and be on my way, took it down the road to a transmission shop and it was a little sensor that cost 350

Exactly the point. They couldn't be trusted to diagnose the problem and you didn't trust them to fix it. All you have to do is take a moment to search right here on this site and you will easily find out that you definitely cannot trust what they told you about getting a "new" transmission as well.

Three stirkes and they are out
