where to drain ATF

Have the fluid, have a filter on order.

Just looked under the truck-confirmed that there is no converter drain plug.

Also see what looks like possibly a temp control valve inline with the hard lines to the cooler(s).

Am assuming to have the transmission pump the old fluid out while I dump fresh in the top (a couple quarts at a time) I need to split the lines at the transmission side of this valve.

Is this the case?

In a related question, does the fluid go through the radiator loop before it goes through the external cooler (trailer towing package) ?

Thanks.

So are you saying you cant find a drain plug on your tranny? If I am correct, only the 4x4`s have a tranny drain plug. I dont think 2x4`s came with a drain plug on the tranny pan.. But when you get a chance, it would help if you could take some pictures of what your talking about.

2 ways of doing this the fast costly way, and the long, hard, messy way (no pun intended)

fast costly way take a hole punch and use it in the tranny pan where ever you may please. and get a new pan.

the other way is to pull all he bolts out of one side and then slowly loosen the other bolts until the pan is at an angle and fluid is coming out of the pan. and you don't need to buy a new pan. but it gets very, very, very messy.

enjoy.

Sorry if I wasnt clear enuff.

No problem dropping the pan and getting the filter and 3-4 quarts out that way.

Did two other family vehicles that way last week, only they had plugs in the torque converters...

What I am trying to do is change all the fluid without taking it somewhere and paying them to hook it up to a machine...

don't worry about the stuff in the TC there's usually less alittle less then a quart in there. just change it as it is, you could unhook the battery and make sure the key is nowhere near the ignition and crank the engine by hand that can get the rest out but it'll take you some time. just change what's in the pan it'll be fine.

I think this tells you some of what you were asking. It is the reason many of us just take it to the dealer for a flush.

I hooked a 6ft clear tube to the aux cooler line going back to the tranny where the rubber hose and elbow line off the cooler.

Looped the clear tube through the tow hook and in a bucket on the drivers side corner . Run it till you get air bubbles(aporx 4qts from pan), then add 4 qts, pump again till you went through 15-16 qts.
During the 2nd 3rd time shift your gears to work the the new through all the passageways.

This was the 1st time I did this and it was a mess free and simple way of doing it...changing the filter (dropping pan) was the hardest of the job....other than changing all the lines ....I had sprung a leak which made me tackle this job.

There's 6-7 quarts in the torque converter.

maybe when it is running, not when it's sitting on jack stands, and even then it's closer to 3-4 quarts.

at the OP should of ask this earlier what trans is it. 4r100 or 4r70w?

If I remember right, was the bottom line at the thermo control valve.

I unhooked both transmission-side hard lines from the valve and put clear hoses on both of them down into a pan.

Was really obvious when I started it up which was which....think the fluid came out of the top one with the engine running.

Just noticed in post #7 openclasspro#11 said it was the one that goes directly from the cooler to the trans. IIRC that is the top one, thanks.
