4R70W Identification

I've got a 2000 F-150 4.6L 2WD. I was told the planetary gears are making all kinds of noise in reverse. Well, started searching the salvage yards for a transmission to replace this one. Unfortunately found that in a 4.6L they have 2 transmission choices for the 4.6L 2wd YL3P-DA and YL3P-HA. I have crawled under this truck and searched the transmission for the ID plate and cannot find it. Called the transmission shop that diagnosed it and of course, the don't have it. I've been doin some searches within the transmission forums and found a reference to white and black connectors and this transmission does have a white connector. I was wondering if someone new if 1.) does it matter between the two 2.) or if they know how-to identify the transmission by the connector. Thank you!!!

If it's a 2000 then the transmission itself shouldn't have a white connector. The vehicle harness will, but not connector that it plugs into that comes out of the transmission.

What you need to get is a 4R70W transmission either from a 4.6 or 5.4 out of a 2wd truck from 98-03 to be safe. Newer ones may work, but the 4R75W came out around then and that won't work without some changes that you don't want to get into.

I guess my next question would be. Since the salvage yard is asking if its a YL3P-DA or YL3P-HA, would it be ok to install one or the other? Are the solenoids the same? I am a mechanic and to me a 4R70W is a 4R70W, my only concern is I don't want to take the time to R&R this transmission and install one that's not going to shift right because the internal electronics are different. Thank you.

Either will work fine, but I woudl try and find a YL3P-MA if it were me. That one has better internals.
