Question 97 F150 4x4 problems

97 F150 4.6, 5 speed, 4x4, Ext Cab. Took truck out of 4 wheel high now that snow is gone and now cant move the 4x4 shift at all. Had this problem a few years ago and took it to a trans shop out here and the guy had it going in about a half hour. He took something off the front axel and sprayed and cleaned it up. He dident even have to put truck on the rack. I should have watched closer but I was in a hurry to get out of there. Can you guys tell me what he may have done so I can save some money. Also can you explain on the 5 speed what makes it shift into 4 wheel drive when you move the short shift. thanks

The short shift lever is your transfer case shifter if I am understanding your question. You have a manual or electronic transfer case shift? Electronic is a switch on the dash.

It sounds like you just have the linkage stuck and the previous fix worked it loose with some pentrating oil.
