Transmission Q's((URGENT))

Ok, not long ago, my transmission went out. Its a 5 speed 4x4 v8..Now its out again for the second time, with the same problem-Shift forks and rods are getting chewed up..WHat could cause it to keep messin up? The shop working on it now say the rod was out of adjustment and the fork wasnt set right by the first person who fixed it...they say they cant find anything inside the transmision itself that is causing it to mess up and they keep saying its in the shifter.. but I think they are overlooking something..

When it first messed up it..you could put it in gear, let out on the clutch and it wouldn'g go, it would just lock down..then I drove it for about 5 months and....

Same with the recent breakdown..

So IMO, I think something inside the transmission is causing this..What do you guys think??

Sounds like the shop could be right . I had that same prob once before years ago on an old truck I had , it was from the adjustments being way out .

So after 230k miles I guess things come out of adjustment lol..I heard a plate and a bearing in the transmission tend to wear out and cause the gear to eat the forks up..? Thats what the first guy that fixed it said..

The tranny won't last forever and it looksl ike you got some good miles out of it there . I never had one last that long , but I tow a lot of very heavy trailers also .

WHat I would do is call a few other shops and tell them your problem and that it is at another shop and you just wanted some opinions on it . Don't take my word as I am not a tranny pro . Sounds like it could be that or it could be something else all together . I know I am not much help here but I would deff call around about it if I was you .

The shift forks are aluminum. They wear out. When they do the gear does not get pushed far enough to properly engage and that can cause grinding or no engagement at all. The forks use a spring pin to hold then to the shift rod. The other end of the shift rods have shift gates pinned to it the same way. If the pins are bent they can cause shift problems. The shift lever pushes on the shift gate to move the shift rods forward or backwards. The shift rods have a ball and spring detent system that keeps the rod in place when it gets pushed by the shift lever. There is an interlock sleeve in the shifter cover that inhibits shifting 2 gears at the same time. The shift lever pivots on bushings. These bushings can wear out. When they do improper shifting can occur. An other thing I can think of is the synchronizer sleeves to shift fork clearance. I would also inspect them for damage.

BTW what do you mean by it would just lock down?

.

It would try to go into 2 gears at once and lock down and stall out as if the E brake was on.

Your reply has made me think of another potential problem. The shift gates have centering springs that push the shift lever into the neutral position. This lines up the lever so it will slide up towards third or down towards 4th. If the springs are too weak they might misalign the lever allowing you to push or pull two gates at the same time locking it in two gears.
