Whaa ???? I was actually serious ! It's what I do - every 30K - change the fluid, drop the pan, change the filter ....

When the pan was off, why would you NOT change it?

The one I suggest is the OEM, which is made by SPX/Filtran (and it will be so marked, unless Ford has gone to different suppliers). The others mentioned may be fine (Wix/Napa), but avoid the no-name, el-cheapo stuff. I go with the SPX/Filtran because I was able to get filtering specs for it. It's an 80 micron pad filter that's a little ahead of most of the aftermarket, which filter to the "industry standard"... only around 100 microns. Filtran claims to have the best filters in the biz and they certainly are the leaders in pursuing trans filter technology by having two movers and shakers in that field working for them (John Eleftherakis and Abe Khalil, who wrote the books on trans filtration even though the OEM bean counters have pretty much ignored them until now... Google those names if you want). They're quite willing to share their numbers on product if asked. It hasn't been so easy to get numbers from some of the others, so I go for what I know. Interestingly, the Wix may be a rebadged Filtran but I have not verified that. If it is, it will say "Filtran" on it somewhere.

I only change mine every other time (so every 60,000 miles). When I don't drop the pan I just get the T-tech service done.

there is no need really to change it. and ford does NOT even suggest a service interval for it.... its just one of those "cant hurt" things to do.......

Half the tranny would have to disintegrate to plug that filter up.

they dont plug or get restricted. they are there in case of a failure. for debris purposes. in fact the ford service procedure for changing the fluid states "do not remove or change the filter" there really is no need for it but it doesnt hurt......
