E4OD Shift Kit

If/when I drop the pan on my '93 E4OD, will I be able to tell from looking at the valve body if a shift kit was installed on a past rebuild?

Further, if I buy one (shift kit) from TransGo, will I be able to install it myself? I'm pretty handy with auto repairs and have rebuilt an AODE in the past (and I never want to do it again - lol). I can see from the kit that a hole will have to be drilled somewhere, so on a scale of 1 - 5 wrenches (5 being most difficult) where does a shift kit lie?

Thanks.
Gary

I had installed a shift kit in my E4OD a long time ago. It wasn't a TransGo kit, but came with different accumulator valves. It wasn't that big a deal. I'd give it 1.5 wrenches.

Thanks, guys.

But to my original question, will I be able to tell if my E4OD has a kit already installed just by looking at the valve body? And if so, what to look for?

The pic of the E4OD kit only shows springs, a seal (?), a plunger... no metal plate:

Okay, jbrew, I'm not trying to make this confusing. I don't care which kit anybody has - I only asked if there was a way to tell if any kit has been installed. If Troyer's kit has an added plate, fine. If TransGo's kit needs holes drilled, I'm fine with that too. Troyer's kit may be the better choice, I don't know yet.

My question is if there was a visual way to tell if any shift kit has been installed. Based on TransGo's kit picture for the E4OD, I don't see a way to tell if those parts are installed into my valve body - from just looking at it. I guess that IF Troyer's kit had been installed in my trans, there would be this extra metal plate somewhere, letting me know that.

I know I want/need a shift kit, but I would hate to spend (and waste) the money to buy a shift kit, unless I knew I didn't already have one. Makes sense?

No, I don't think there's any way to tell. How does it shift now? What makes you think you have one installed?

It shifts okay, but I have no point of reference about firmness (just bought the truck). I'll be doing a fluid change and want to install a kit if there's not one already in it. PO claims a trans rebuild 30K ago, along with the engine which had performance parts installed. I would think the owner would have put a shift kit in the trans at the time as well but PO doesn't know (was done by the PO to him).

To jbrew,
Hey, I noticed that you deleted your posts on this thread. Hope you didn't read anything into what I said to you. In re-reading it now, I guess it could have been taken as flippant but I meant no offense. My apologies if so.

Tone of voice is just one of those things you can't convey via the written word.
