I was wanting to know if having 4:56s would do anything as far as fighting overdrive. I fight it alot when driving around 55-65mph. It tends to want to shift into 4th and then immediately into overdrive which means I have to "get into it" to get to 70mph. I have an edge programmer, but I dont know the first thing about setting shift points or if that would even help. When I get past the 55-65 range then it usually hooks up just fine. But when it shifts into OD in that range it wants to drop right back out to accelerate when I attempt to speed up a little and pass someone or something like that.
Any thought, suggestions?
Thanks,
Brad

Well, only thing I can say is that its supposed to drop outa OD when you try to accelerate. OD is really just a cruising gear for gas mileage, as I know my truck can hit 100 redlining 3rd. Once your new gears are in just adjust for the gears and tire size in the pcm and the gears should help it accelerate a bit quicker and keep it from dropping outa OD as easily.

If the edge allows you to change the part throttle shift points then maybe thats something you could try, but I dont have one so I dont know if it can do that or how. I know I can tune the shift points with my sniper programmer in low, mid, and WOT ranges, but I never messed with them as the transmission shifts fine for my taste as it is.

Are you sure your fighting overdrive? You may be experiencing the converter locking and unlocking, but not shifting out of OD. Set your EDGE display to show COM GEAR so you can see what gear it is in. It's common for people to say it is shifting out of OD, when the converter is only unlocking.
It says that you are allowed to set all your shift points and such, but I have not messed with it. I just set into the "towing" setting. I never run WOT on my truck so I have no need to set shift points for that. I have no need to be the first one to 70mph on the highway and I wouldnt take a lifted truck to the track. I just want better drive ablity.

Not much you can do to control a locking converter, it locks when it wants to. There is one thing you can do to prevent a down shift on hills to maintain speed, but will not be enough when passing. When you approach a hill with the converter locked in OD, take your foot off the gas for one second. That is just long enough for the converter to unlock, which will give you more engine rpms and more torque for the hill. I think it is easier to do if you don't have a programmer because the trans if more responsive with a programmer.
yeah, I agree with what greencrew says. There's not much you can do about the converter locking. I still think that the gears will help the transmission stay in gear and stay locked a bit better though, as the tranny will have a much easier time spinning the tires. You should just see how much it changes once you have the gears in. Maybe it'll be more to you're liking with the new gears.

I appreciate the comments. However, the "drop out" I was experiencing was completely ridded of by switching to 4:56s
. I can accelerate smoothly at pretty much any speed. I was sooooooooooo impressed with how easily I could get out and pass people
. It is a little intimidating at stop lights at first.. gotta give the brakes a little more pressure otherwise itll creep on ya. The tuner has been nothing but good IMO, but for some reason I have this sound that has occured since putting it in. Im not quite sure how to describe other than saying that it sounds like little gears spinning really fast maybe? Its only during acceleration and goes away as soon as it starts shifting down to lower rpms or I let off of the gas. I was told the sounds in the dash though so I have no idea. Sorry to go off subject, but thanks for the responses!
