MERCON or MERCON V Fluid ?

I have a 1997 f150 4x4 with the 4.6 engine with vin code W.I am going to change the tranny fluid and filter. So I reading around about what fluid to use.The dip stick says MERCON only, but now I am reading about a Service Bulletin from Ford to use MERCON V in all trannys now because Mercon is not being produced anymore. Can some one clear this up for me.

Mercon V, just make sure when you read the label on the ATF that it is good for vehicles requiring V.

I will be looking for the MotorCraft Version if possible.Looks like MERCON has been discontinued in July 2007 from what I found out.So any MERCON found must have been sitting somewhere for sometime.

I was told that synthetic (Mobil1, for instance) will hold up longer, and run a bit cooler?

Mercon V is the best to use. On an ex-Ford trans engineer's (JW) recommedation, I put Mercon V in my 95 Mark VIII's 4R70W and it worked great along with all the other members of the Mark VIII message board.

Just use Amsoil ATF and you don't have to worry about using the wrong fluid.
