Question Mercon V

With oil prices being as high as they are,and getting higher every week,i'm looking for other choices of Mercon V besides Motorcraft or Castrol.AZ has Coastal brand for $3.99 a quart;anyone ever try this brand? WM has Super Tech for $3.77 a quart;anyone ever try this brand? I am thinking as long as it meets Fords specs its ok........

I'm using the WM Super Tech brand in the Dex3/Mercon flavor from the gallon jugs ($10/jug) Since the begining of the year... No ill effects that I've come accross yet... I don't even know what was being used when I was taking it into a local trans shop to do the yearly pan drops...

It's supposed to meet the same specification. Should be just as good as the name brands and it most likely is. That said, the only store brand oil I've ever used was in a old $100 Chevy a long time ago so I'm a sucker for the brand names.

I did use some Walmart 75/145 synthetic differential lube in my truck. It cost about half what Ford was charging for theirs.

FYI-

There aren't really a million manufacturers for lubricants, many off brands come out of the same facilities that produce the name brands, they bottle them in different jugs, and maybe don't have all the same additives, but is still of the same quality. For example, one of our local parts store reps told us their motor oil came out of the same facility bottling Valvoline among a few other brands. It simply didn't have the same additives.
It's more important to be assured that what you are using meets or exceeds the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer, check the SAE and API ratings and your manual. Save yourself some money... if what you need is just to service/maintain your vehicle without any special needs, buy the off brand and pocket the change.

Not every fluid meets the same specs. Make sure that the label actually says "Mercon V" and not just "Mercon". I use Red Line Oil. Red Line produces about a half dozen ATF formulas, but only 2 meet "Mercon V" specs.
