Transmission Fluid Swap

I am getting closer to 30k on my truck. I've got a 2007 F150 v6 5 speed manual.

Anyhow, I know on some cars/trucks they want you to change out the fluid at 30k. I know this won't hurt to change it and to get all of the gunk out of it.

Now, my dinging question is... should I change from Mercon from Ford or should I go with something like Royal Purple's Mercon?

I've heard rants and raves about RP products. So should I?

I have tried all the different types of oil from Synthetic ATF to gear oil. I have Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in it now. Unless you run low on oil you will not heat it up enough to warrant spending lots of money on exotic oils. Any synthetic Mercon type ATF will be just fine.

Hmm...

That Mobil 1 sounds good...

I know it's less problematic or finicky like automatic transmissions on which fluid to put in there.

But I just like making sure it won't damage any seals or anything, so I figured I'd ask.

Then again, usually *most* fluids like this are API certified for use where that particular fluid is required and say so right on the container.

I just had mine done and the shop used BG fluid. It's a full synthetic "universal" ATF.

I have used Royal Purple, Lucas Oil, Red Line, Motorcraft, and Mobil 1. All worked just fine for me. Just remember that your 2007 calls for Mercon V, not Mercon III. Make sure that you get the right spec. Fluids are not all the same. My last batch of fluid came from Red Line, and only the Red Line D4 & High Temperature ATF meet Mercon V specs. All other Red Line brand ATF does not. So just be sure to read the label carefully.

It's a manual tranny. Meeting Mercon V specs isn't critical like it is in an automatic. You can even put GM Synchromesh fluid in it.

Ford no longer produces the MerconIII and that is why it is no longer recommended. But in the rare case that Ford will warranty the transmission you should use what they recommend. And as glc noted GM syncromesh fluid does work. I have even used it.

It does not say to use Mercon V!

Like I said, a manual tranny is not fussy. You can even use gear oil in there, but if you do, it will be a bear to shift when it's cold.

That TSB only applies to automatic transmissions.

Synchromax is a manual transmission fluid that increases performance and the life of your equipment. It improves shifting, reduces gear noise and increases power transfer to the wheels. It also lowers operating temperatures and provides outstanding wear protection for longer transmission life.

Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automotive transmission fluid. It’s also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials. It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.

Synchromax is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec technology for unsurpassed performance and protection.
