Question Stock trans cooler to PS cooler

I'm swapping out the dinky stock trans cooler in my 2000 F150 scab for the stock F250LD as described in this thread:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/tr...how-loads.html

I was thinking that my current trans cooler, which I will be removing, is larger than than my current PS cooler and maybe it would make sense to use the removed cooler to replace the PS cooler. Has anyone done this? Any thoughts as to why this may not be a good idea?

Thanks all!

For anyone reading this and thinking about doing it, please do yourself a favor and buy a new cooler for this swap. I have seen guys use one from a yard and burn up their transmission when the garbage in the used cooler finally breaks loose.

NEVER use a used transmission cooler.

Also, the transmission cooler might have a thermal bypass internally which the power steering cooler does not, so I wouldn't do it. If I were concerned about a larger PS cooler, I think I would buy a larger new cooler without a thermal bypass.

Long makes some awesome coolers by the way.

I run the same F-250 cooler in my truck. Works great,,but I did not go with an external filter like some do.
I don't see where there would be any need to upgrade the PS cooler.

The stock tranny cooler does not have any type of bypass in it, so you'd be OK to go toward with your idea. With that said, I agree with Phil that there's no need at all and most likely not worth the cost/aggrivation.

YES, as mentioned, buy a new cooler. I have it on my truck and that sucker does the job. I didn't do an external filter neither...got an internal one

Thanks!

Yeah, I bought the replacement / upgraded transmission cooler new and will be installing it with an external filter in the coming week.

I was under the truck planning out things and when I got the notion, "Hey, the old trans cooler is a bit larger than the PS cooler. Since I'm taking it out anyway, why not take out the PS cooler and use the old trans cooler in its place?"

I don't think it would be more than 30 - 40 minutes worth of extra work, I have the hose and would only need a couple of -6 an fittings to do it. I also didn't consider the internal condition of the trans cooler; however, I am fanatical and **** about performing maintenance so the fluid has never been "bad" before I've changed it out.

Thanks for all the replies and your thoughts!

Vehicles got along fine without power steering coolers for many years, so why bother changing the stock one?
