I really want to swap in a standard tranny

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the standard tranny in the 04-08 f150's really weak and best suited for 2wd V6's? Im about to start searching for a wrecked f250 4x4 with the manual tranny. Do I need to look for one with the 5.4 like my truck has, or would one from a V10 or 6.0 stroker work? I know I also need all the clutch assembly and ecm stuff to get rid of the auto...is there anything I'm missing? oh, and I'd be getting the gluster and steering collumn out of an fx4 with the console shift so I can get rid of any trace of the truck being an auto I'm not looking for performance gains or towing capacity by doing this, I just love manual trannys and I have always wanted one in my truck.

A ZF transmission from a SuperDuty will bolt up to your engine. The bellhousing bolt pattern on the 5.4 in your truck and a SuperDuty EDIT: 5.4 or 6.8 are the same. Having said that the space in the transmission tunnel may be a concern. The ZF transmission is taller than the Mazda 5 speed in the F-150. I am not sure about the transmission mounting points so that may be of a concern too. While you are there your transfer case shift linkage will need to be taken care of unless you have an electric case. Drive shafts will need to be measured and adjusted. Check my sig and you will see that I have a manual transmission from the factory. I am studying the possibility of using a ZF transmission in mine. I am presently on tranny #5. I lost count of the clutches that I have destroyed.
