How bad is this? '01 4.6L 4X4 AT

I've had the truck about 3 weeks, so I'm not sure of it's past. It looks like new, and there's no sign of abuse. It's stock, except the previous owner had new 35" tires on it.....I replaced them with stock size Michelins. It's been driving and shifting perfectly.

Until tonight. Going down the road at about 55, the truck suddenly BUMPED and the engine started racing at about 4K. The ODoff light came on, and the truck started hunting through the gears. I drove on towards home and everything leveled out. About another mile, another BUMP, ODoff came back on....hunting again....this time the Check Engine Soon came on and it's stayed on.

At one point, it lost all traction, then it sorta made a grinding sound and connected back up. Leveled back out, and I limped on slowly home. No drips or leaks....no smoke.

Any ideas? Does it sound fatal?

Oh yeah....forgot. 44K miles.

The CEL codes should give some insight into the problem.
Autozone will usually pull the codes for you for free, I've heard.

Check the shift linkage/cable and make sure it's working and properly adjusted.
The mechanical linkage only selects Park/Reverse/Neutral/Forward.

The switch on the trans at the shift lever (I forget what the official name if it is) tells the ECM what gear is selected (1,2,D) and is also your back up light and neutral safety switch.

My 91 F250 did something similar...
I was driving along enjoying the scenery and it seemed to just jump into what I thought was neutral, bucked a couple of times then was fine.
It only did it once, then it was fine for weeks and then it did it again 2 or 3 more times days apart.
It finally set a code in the ECM for intermittent transmission range selection, or something like that....91 is pre-OBDII, the codes were a little cryptic.

Short story long, I found that the connections to that range switch on the trans had turned into chia pet inside the plug.

Replaced the switch and cleaned up the connector pins....problem solved.

Hopefully you didn't do any internal damage.
Grinding sounds usually aren't good.....

Thanks, n
They tranny guy opened the pan this morning. It was obviously the first time it had been opened. No metal or shavings. Fluid was nice and clean. The codes were for 3 or the solenoids. He thinks maybe that's the only problem. It's coming home tomorro. Should I get it flowers or anything?
