Only 1st and 2nd gear....

Hi,

Started my 2006 F150 5.4L 4X4 today and did not go into 3rd gear.

When it passes from 2nd to 3rd gear it seems like i'm in N position.

When RPM comes down and go back to 2nd gear it accelerates normally.

REAR gear works good,1 and 2 too.

What do you think?

Thx

yah! ;-(

Yah, my tranny did the same thing, but my problem might be to much power!
1st and 2nd perfectly fine, but no drive, pissed, cause this is going to be expensive.

So does anyone know who builds a tranny for an 06 F150 4x4 that can with stand 500hp?

Anyways, sorry dude, looks like we're both screwed.

well when i had this issue, it turned out to be a broken intermediate stub shaft. i believe one other option aside from electrical may be a burnt clutch pack.

Darrin Burch built a 4r70w for me that handles my 450+ fwhp 5.4, i have a complete thread on all the crap i went through with another "builder" who bent me over the barrel. be VERY careful in this arena, i wasnt and i'm still fighting to make things right with Rods Cars.

even with a built trans, you have to keep some realistic thoughts in mind, you cant do a WOT 3-4 shift, this shaft is tiny. I have 20 hp electric motors at work that snap shafts way bigger than this guy, its amazing it even holds up in my mind.

my last words of advise today, Darrin @ BC-Automotive has done me right, and he has proof of his credentials in running vehicles, check out the marauder in MMFF magazine. ( http://www.musclemustangfastfords.co...der/index.html mentioned at beginning of pg 2 when it gets to his trans. )

hmmm......

Well that would be nice if that was all it was
Looks like I just need to suck it up and go to the tranny shop
But I'm not going to get my hopes up, but it makes me wonder cause it's not making any odd noise's and it was shifting from 2nd to 3rd while under boost when it happened. So who knows.

i did the install myself. Darrin is out of state but worth every penny.

i took my original tranny to Rods Cars ( Kennewick WA on Clearwater Ave.)
he took my tranny in, told me it would be race built, did a transmission exchange (NOT REBUILD OR BUILD in any way let alone race spec, this was a 94 tranny and was junkyard quality) with State Transmission in Pasco WA.

im not the tranny expert but i havent heard of the intermediate stub shaft breaking from a 2-3 shift, i have heard of 3-4 shifts doing it, how much boost you running? my tranny also made no noise.

if you have an ohm meter and some patience you can ohm test your wiring, or you can pay 80 some bucks at ford and they'll hook up a type of break out box tool that allows the tech to manually select the gear without the pcm in the loop. this will determine if the problem lies within the trans. which could be something as simple as a bad/stuck solenoid or a gasket.

I'm running close to 10psi. Not crazy, but I'm still breaking in the motor.

My tuner guy is completely shocked because of all the safety tunes he did with the SCT for the tranny, so he told me to re install the tune, no luck.

So I guess I'll just take it in to the tranny shop and see what they have to say, if it's something small and cheap I'll be stoked, but if it's going to need a new tranny I'll be contacting Darrin.

Thanks bye the way!

If the intermediate stub shaft breaks, can you just replace that? And is there an upgraded stub shaft that you can put in that will be stronger? I think my shaft broke yesterday, only 1st and 2nd gear, no third, I have reverse. I babied it home a couple of miles by downshifting to 2nd and then going into neutral to coast home. I am wondering if I can just replace that instead of having to rebuild the whole trans? I only have 15K on the rebuilt trans. I am running a SC 5.4 out of a Lightning in my 02 Screw. 4r70W trans. I think it went out doing a downshift on the freeway, I was in a hurry back home and was driving semi-hard, but not racing it, that is bad that that shaft breaks like that. Really hoping I can just replace the shaft and not rebuild the whole thing....

Normally when the stub shaft breaks you end up damaging the direct drum as well. And yes, you can get an even stronger shaft. I don't like them because they don't break. Sooner or later someone is going to end up with transmission in their lap because of that and it won't be pretty.

Be careful guys. Make sure you get everything done right from transmission build to tuning to make sure it doesn't happen to you again.
