04+ F150 tranny filter false info!!!

Well I would post a couple pics of my old tranny filter for my 05' 5.4 F150 tranny but I can't figure out how to attach on here. Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know I broke open my old filter today after my pan drop and filter change and low and behold, the darn filter isn't a screen as the dealerships tell you. It's a filter if I've ever seen one. So, I hope everybody considers dropping the pan and changing this thing every 50k or so.
For me it was a piece of cake and I'm no mechanic by any means. Bought a siphon pump from autozone(the red one with the nice bige orange tubes). Pumped out about 4 quarts in less than a minute, no spilling at all.
Used 10mm socket set and dropped the 14 or so bolts, pan dropped. The magnet was cruddy and so was the outside of the filter. I've got 62k and had it flushed only at 30k. Word of advice though, cover your face when you pull off the old filter b/c some oil will sling on you when you ****** off the old filter. Put on new filter bolted pan back using the reusable gasket. Hand tightened the bolts then snuggly tightened them up skipping every other one then do them. Wasn't much harder to do than a basic oil change. I plan to siphon the 4-5 quarts every other oil change and replace. It's that simple to do. Oh, I have my yellow pan thingy as a souvenir.

Post some pics when you can, I'm quite interested! I had a flush performed at 30K, sounds like the next service will be a pan drop, filter change, & flush!....

How much trash was in the filter when you cut it open? Ford doesn't recommend changing the internal filter unless the trans is being rebuilt. That's because the only time there is enough trash in the filter is when the trans is already trash.

PS-I've been telling people for years that it's a filter, not a screen. I'm glad someone finally agrees with me.

How do you post pictures on here? I tried but it wouldn't let me do it. I've got to be doing something wrong.
The filter media is folded over on itself inside the casing. It was gritty looking along the inside of the media as it filtered through. I plan to have it flushed(maybe) after the next 30k and filter change. The flush is running closer to 200 bucks at Ford where it use to cost 139 bucks. I used the autozone equivalent for a replacement filter. Looked exactly like the Motorcraft one inside and out.

Hold it up to your monitor screen and use a staple gun. It works for me. I can see those pictures every time I'm on the computer. Then I just take them down when I'm tired of looking at them.

I recently dropped my pan and replaced the filter and only 5 or so quarts lost. I did this around 50k myself. I know it doesn't replace all of the fluids like a flush, but it is what I do and have been happy with. I had quite a bit of stuff on the magnet, so that was a disappointment, but I was glad the fluid was clean looking as it came out. I too was the first person to retrieve the yellow plug from my pan in my truck. The filter is like any other tranny filter I have ever changed, no screen, just a simple $5-7 foam and plastic filter.

One thing that surprised me was that the filter didn't have any supporting brackets or screws, simply pulled down and was held in by the O-ring thing. I pushed the new one in until I felt it click in. Oh well, I guess the engineers at FMC know what they're doing, unlike the dang sparkplug/head design.

To post pictures, they most come from a hosted site such as photobucket or they can come from your albums. They cannot come directly from your harddrive. Once they are on a hosted site, you copy the url in properties and using the pic icon(second from right just above the post box) paste it.

It's supported by the pan. Once the pan is installed the filter is trapped in place.

Yeah, I just popped out the old one and then transfered the rubber o-ring and popped the new one back up. Really simple. It seemed too simple, lol.

Why did you transfer the old o-ring to the new filter? Just curious as the one I bought from Autozone came with a new o-ring. I think it was made by championlabs or something like that....

I didn't notice how it lined up when reinstalling however I didn't notice any groove or such for the intake tube to stick in/on for bracing. I don't remember it sitting over the magnet either which was the only piece in the pan that wasn't flat.

Ok, so if this is a "true" filter, I wonder what it's specs are. Absolute rating or beta? I have some unverified information that says this filter is only a 100 micron, "boulder catcher." I have tried the Wix site, which lists the filtering ability of their oil and hydraulic filters, but not this tranny filter. Anybody know?

The filter I got didn't have one. No biggie though. But the main thing is that it was really simple. Next step if to find a pan with a drain or just make one. I like to at least change the fluid once in a while without the mess and hassle of the pan being dropped.

The pickup of the filter sits in the bottom of the bump in the tranny pan and the main body of the filter sits on the pan itself. It can't go anywhere.
