What do the Ford dealers hook to to remove fluid if not the pan?

Dealerships flush with a machine hooked up to the transmission lines that lead to the cooler.

Ah so thats what they attach to? Why do the recommend to change the filter at 150k? Does it not need to be changed more often?

I am gonna let the dealer do it, I trying to figure out a way to make sure it was done.

Get a pan with a drain plug. Then you can change that fluid to your heart's delight.

Another easy way to change some fluid is to buy a siphon pump from autozone, run it down the dipstick tube, pump out as much fluid as you can and replentish with the same amount of new fluid. I plan to do this every other engine oil change and drop pan/change filter every 30-40k. After my experience with my local Ford Service department, they will not get my truck back, esp to service the tranny. My truck holds 7 quarts of motor oil. They changed it last. When I changed it the other day, only got 3.8 quarts back into drain pan. Some S.O.B was trying to skimp on the oil b/c I know my truck doesn't leak oil or burn over 3 quarts in 3000 miles. I'll do my own service from now on.

I'd stick with a proper transmission flush:

A transmission flusher, or fluid exchanger, simply uses the car's transmission pump (while the engine is running) to pump all the bad fluid out while new fluid is pumped in its place. This process removes nearly 100% of the old fluid, not 1/3 like the "drop-the-pan" service. The torque converter, lines, cooler, and transmission clutches hold the rest of the old fluid!
Myths

Transmission fluid should never be changed! Wrong, fluid wears out and must be changed.

Transmission fluid never wears out! Wrong, heat from the torque converter and normal operation and idling wear fluid out, even synthetic!

Dropping the pan and replacing the filter is the best! Wrong, this can often cause the transmission to fail!

If the transmission has a lot of miles on it, you should just leave it alone. Wrong, our founder has proven that even old vehicles can be made like new again without causing a failure or breakdown.

No crap! They just did the same thing to me. I barely got 5 quarts out when I changed it.

Anyway, I heard you can disconnect the line to the tranny cooler, drain about 4 quarts, add 4 quarts, and keep doing this until it starts coming out clean. Anyone ever try this?

I'm MORE surprised they never checked the oil level between changes!

No crap! This dealer did my oil twice, the first time, I checked it and it had the proper amount of oil per the dipstick. So that's why I DIDN'T check it this time, I assumed they put the correct amount of oil in again. Never again.

Reading the posts, I'm not sure it was ever clear as to the differences in the services. When Ford refers to a tranny service, they mean dropping the pan, changing the filter, and replacing the lost fluid, which will be only about 6 qts. A tranny flush involves hooking it up to a machine and replacing all 16 or so qts of fluid. The pan does not get dropped in this procedure. The tranny service usually runs about $90 where the flush is usually in the $125 or so range.

I had my tranny serviced at 30,000 and had it flushed at 60,000. I will probably have it flushed again at 100,000. I will also have the coolant replaced at 100,000. That will be way too soon as I have 82,000 right now.

But you really should be checking your oil level at least every other fill up. It's not uncommon to drop a quart or so in level between changes. To go 3000 miles without even checking the level, to me, is just umm nuts.

I'm bad. I don't usually check my oil for 10,000 km's, which is when I do my next oil change

I used to check it, but now I'm comfortable with the truck. I guess that could come back to bite me in the *** one day.
