Automatic to 5spd swap

I have a 2002 F150 supercab, 5.4L 4x4 with an automaticn trans. I have the oppertunity to get ahold of a 5spd trans out of a 99 f150 with a 4.2L v6 4x4. My question is can I swap the 5 spd into my truck? If its possible what all would I need to aqquire to make this possible? I have the whole truck to get parts from like pedals and what not but not sure what all I would need. Any information will be appreciated.

The first thing you have to find is a flywheel and clutch assy for your engine. That is IF the trans will bolt up to the 5.4, and the 4.2 truck has to also be a 4x4. If it's not, forget it. Then there's the issue with the PCM in the truck due to the fact that the automatic is computer controlled and just unhooking the trans will cause the CEL to stay on all the time, and may cause driveability issues also. Let's recap. You need a PCM from a 5.4 with a 5 spd, a 4x4 transmission, and all necessary clutch parts. If you've got the time, go for it. Hope this helps.

You may need to also change the wiring harness on the engine. Not sure, but keep it in mind.

You'll need a lot of parts, money & time but it can be done.
And after all that,,the power of the 5.4 will rip it out.

Not worth it in my book!

I cant imagine why someone would do that swap. My brother inlaw back about 20 years ago did it to a Chevy he had. It pretty much ruined the truck I thought. Sell your truck buy one that already has a manual..

No you cannot do it. The 4.2 transmission has a different bellhousing bolt pattern. You need to find a 4.6 V8 transmission, Get the transmission crossmember and the pedals while you are there. Don't forget the complete hydraulic system either. Hopefully the transmission comes with a functioning harness. Next is a tune to turn off the sensor input/output from the Automatic to the PCM. One last little annoyance will be cutting the hole in the transmission tunnel for the shift lever. Your new tranny has one, right? Including all the boots and floor plates?

Thanks JMC thats what I was looking for. On the bell housing of the transmission is it like the older ones where its something you can change or a solid casting. I dont have the transmission yet it was a theory I had, a friend of mine wrecked his truck and my brother and I were thinking about buying it for a parts truck everything is there and it runs and drives just does it in a sideways motion as the frame is bent. Also when it comes to the flywheel will one off a 4.6 work or doest that get into balancing issues? I have not found if these engines are internally or externally balanced.

Thanks for the input so far

Unfortunately the bell housings are cast as part of the transmission. The crank is internally balanced so you need a balanced flywheel. A flywheel from a 97-98 F-150 Windsor engine will work. The 8th digit in the VIN is a 6. If you continue with this project you will need to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter. I have not looked at the automatics to see if there is a cut out pressed into the floor. If there is then it makes alignment easy. One thing you need to know about the 4.6 manual transmissions. In 1999 Ford moved the shifter lever back 55mm, about 2 inches. If you cut the floor accordingly you cannot use the 1997-1998 model years transmissions without changing to a 1999+ shift control housing.
