A torque converter might not be a bad idea if you have the funds and are looking for a little more oomph off the line.

What would you like for your truck to do differently?

Faster(quicker) at how much of a compromise? It's possible to get the truck up and moving quicker off the line with a torque converter for sure. These engines love stall. That's why the factory gave them a converter that will stall around 2500rpm. But, moving up enough to really make a difference is going to cost you fuel mileage in the city.

And remember, these are darn heavy trucks.

Well if the stall is that high to begin with and seeing how it will kill my mileage mabye no torque converter

Just thinking while the trans was out i might as well take advantage of it....Just Throwing it out there but what about a light weight flywheel?

A lightweight flywheel is more for the manual transmission vehicles. On an automatic transmission equipped vehicle there really isn't much mass to the flywheel and the factory one is about as light as you are going to get.

Yeah, I kinda figured that one out a little to late. Well now I know, but the trans has been pulled a put back together so all is done.

Thanks for the help

How often were you getting starting issues? I think I might have a bad tooth. Rarely it wants to crank but never seems to start just right. Not enough to worry about but never fun when it happens.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying. But if your starter cranks and the engine doesn't and you have to let go of the starter switch and turn it again to get the engine cranking, your starter drive is bad. If that is the case I would get it fixed ASAP before you also have to pull the transmission to replace the flywheel.

sry,,,, it was intermittent. Could be 2-3 times a day or to 2-3 times a week.

My issues have been maybe 3 times in the last 4 months. The truck sound like it is starting but doesn't crank just right. My mechanic told me about the bad tooth theory and it is messing up what the computer sees the flywheel is doing, or something similar. Sorry to hi-jack.

I would get it looked at asap before your flywheel gets chewed if it isnt already...

1) there is a rubber plug right under the front of the transmission, take it out and you'll see the TQ converter and the flywheel. Go in the hole with a pry bar and try to turn the flywheel by putting pressure on the bell housing and prying on the TQ Converter. inspect all the flywheel teeth as they spin by. Look very closely because it might be hard to see grinding.. could be a millimeter or 2 shave off...

2) If the flywheel is ok the pull the starter and check the gear for damage.

I had to replace both. New starter gear, they charged me around 90 bucks

But the computer doesn't see the flywheel doing anything, it monitors crankshaft position. I think you may have a different problem. What i had is when i would start the truck, it would grind as if i were to start it while it was on.

What you describe "doesnt crank just right" is pretty far off from the problem im describing so its probably something different
