Trans questions????

Long story short. Tranny went out fri and my buddy shop had a rebuilt on in a van e250. The motor locked up right after they spent $2800 on the tranny. So they put it in my truck and all is good but 1st to 2nd is extremely quick and firm. (almost make the tires squeal and me jerk) the rest of the gears and also pretty quick to. Is there anyway to tell if some one put a shift kit in it??? I also have a superchip micro 1715, can I adjust the firmsness and make it softer? It almsot feels like its in performance mode all the time. Sorry so winded any help is appriciated.

I know it might not seem like it might matter much, but the van transmission has a different calbration to it. Same thing happens when you take a truck transmission and put it in a car.

Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, you don't have much ability to adjust that with a 1715. I could be wrong because it's been at least 6 years since I touched one last, but it seems to me that you can't.

My choice would be an SCT tune and I would have to point you to Troyer Performance to get it from. I don't think anyone anywhere has more experience with these trucks. Mike and/or whoever else you talk to there can also tell you if the 1715 can actually do anything for you or if you should sell it.

The problem is that the transmission hardware has a lot to do with it and the computer has a lot to do with it. The tune in your computer is designed to work with the hardware that was in your truck. One side has been changed and the other doesn't know it since there is no feedback from the transmission to the computer.

So again, unfortunately, there isn't an easy answer here other than a tune or putting the proper valve body for your truck and the matching accumulator spring setups in this transmission to make the hardware match what the computer thinks it is controlling. It isn't something that can be adjusted. It requires a hardware change or a programming change to fix it.

The computer is the computer that comtrols all of the engine, transmission and electrical functions on the vehicle. Unfortunately you just can't swap out the transmission part.

This is why I keep trying to emphasize that the only way to do this is to modify the transmission to make it like the one that was in your vehicle originally or have the computer in your vehicle tuned to work with the hardware that you now have.

Unfortunately Ford can't do the computer tuning for this and your average transmission shop won't be able to either. Either can change the hardware to match the vehicle, but that will be far more pricey than getting a good tune from someone like Troyer Performance. With that tune you will get the added benefits of extra performance and fuel economy.

Sorry that you are in this position, but there isn't a cheap or easy fix. To get it right you are going to have to go to someone that knows these vehicles inside out. That is why I REALLY suggest Troyer. They have tuned more of these than anyone else in the world and they will know what to do.

Again, your only choices are to replace the hardware that is in the transmission now with parts that match what came in the vehicle or have your computer tuned to match what is in the vehicle now. A transmission shop of Ford can help you with the first option, but only a well experienced aftermarket tuner can help you with the second.
