Just what is the compelling good reason to not use the proper spec fluid?

im gonna have to vote with the masses on this one, used the designated fluid on it.

regular mercon is still used in manual transmissions only

I agree, get the right fluid in there. I don't ever use additives to make the fluid pretend to be something that it isn't.
