Question HELP w/ strange sensation and noises.

I just bought a used 2000 F-150. The strange thing it's doing, which "seems" to be getting slightly worse...it's hard to tell.

This is hard to explain:

When I take off it seems to hesitate or stutter a little. Almost feels like the rear tires are slipping a little (but they aren't). It's not the common driveshaft yoke slamming, as I already had that corrected. Sometimes it'll actually give you that feeling a few times real quick during take off. Again, like something's slipping, but there's not banging or jerking or anything. In addition, sometimes it feels like the tranny is shifting at strange spots during the driving range. Almost feels like it's shift 4 or 5 times during acceleration up to 45 mph. And it doesn't do this all the time either.

Today I decided to hold the brake at a stop and give it a little gas. Instead of trying to take off like you'd expect, it doesn't try at all, but you can hear a very quiet growl like something's slipping.

And FYI, I did have the tranny fluid and filter changed not that long ago.

And finally, sometimes (very rarely), when you slow down to stop at a red-light, just before you come to a complete stop, the engine will idle down real rough and then jump back up. Almost like when you're driving a 5-speed and almost forget to push in the clutch when you stop, but then you catch it at the last second. Again, this it has only done this maybe 3 times.

Any ideas on this? Please help.

I had the same thing happen to me on my '99 F-150 (V-8). I traced the problem to the Vacuum hose that connects to the back of the intake manifold and goes to the passenger side valve cover. Problem fixed.

The sad part of this deal was that I took my truck in to the Ford dealership and had them run a diagnostic (for $99) on the truck. They said they weren't sure what the problem was and gave some suggestions on what they could do ( plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc.) and that that might not fix the issue.

I was thinking to my self "NOT"! My own troubleshooting kept leading me back to a vacuum link as to the problem. So, I took my truck back home and started pulling off the vacuum hoses one by one and visually inspecting them. That is when I found out that the vacuum hose that connects to the back of the intake manifold and goes to the passenger side valve cover had some small cracks in it. I bought one online for about $30 and replaced it. No more problems.
