No Drive please help!

2001 f150 4X4
Hi I'm new to the board and this is an excellent site, Good job all!
My issue is I just got the truck & drove it 300 miles home and all went well but once I got home and went to put it in drive it would not go. Reverse works well but drive wont in any gear o/d on or not unless I sit there and rev it untill it slams into gear but once it does it runs perfect up shift, down shift, stop, start untill I shift it to park, reverse or neutral then again drive will not engage unless I rev it up to 3500 to 4000 rpm then it will start to creep & all of a sudden slam into gear. Hot or cold makes no difference. The truck ran fine earlier but developed this problem like I said after driving about 300 miles. Any ideas what could have caused this and any possible fix? Thanks for the help.
Ray.

Sounds like you got a truck that needs a tranny rebuild!

Probably won't matter now if the fluid is just low. Those 4K slip-shifts will have toasted it the rest of the way and you're 99.9% looking at a rebuild.

sounds like your having burnt foreward clutch syndrome. it sucks! lol

Since your most likely looking at a rebuild, i'd suggest you do your research VERY thoroughly. i didnt and i got burned BAD on a trans from a local guy. check out my thread below yours. let me know if you want my input of where to start talking first.

i been burned bad, now i'd like to try to keep others from getting bit like i did.

i guaruntee you that the owner before you was losing the tranny so they topped it off with brake fluid to last enough to sell it. i have seen it many times.
