lost reverse !!! only works when cold :(

Thumbs down lost reverse !!! only works when cold :(

Hi everyone i'm kinda new to this but i need some HELP!!
I have a 97 f150 4x4 with a 4.6 auto ... all of a sudden i went to back up and it hesitated then worked once but now if i let it sit for awhile reverse will work for a min then it starts to need more rpm to move then it will not work at all ... All gears work perfectly even o/d.... what could this be I've looked at the tranny fluid and it looks great (nice bright red) does anyone have any idea what could have caused this ... please help ... if you need to no more before you are able to help just ask ...any help at all would be greatly appreciated.... oh and i have only owned this truck for about 1 month!!!

Sounds like they did a flush before you bought it. Mine (97 F150) had the same issue and I replaced the tranny filter and put in Lucas and the issue went away. There could be something else but this is cheap and easy to do compared to a shop guessing with parts and if it dont work your not out much. If it does work you saved a bunch but Ill bet its the filter clogged.

You will probably need a rebuild. It is unlikely related to any flush....the tranny simply has either worn out frictions or has an internal leak that is bleeding off hydraulic pressure in the reverse circuit. When the oil is cold, it is thicker and is still able to perform. When it warms, it thins out and is either leaking down or is otherwise causing the slipping.

You can try some RED LUBEGUARD and keep your fingers crossed. You might get lucky.

You said the fluid looked good color wise, but are you absolutely sure it is completely full?

It likely is and this is likely something more complicated, but I had to ask.

If the fluid is full then there is an internal problem with the transmission.
