Transmission problem or somthing simple?

I’ve got an ’08, 5.4, 4x4 with 9K miles. Every once in a while, since about the 3K mile mark, when the truck shifts between 2nd and 3rd the RPMs rev up near 2500. This is a very, very rare occurrence and I can’t pinpoint anything specifically that might be causing it. I typically drive the truck like a granny and keep shifts near 1800 RPM. From what I understand these trucks are supposed to adapt to our driving style and compensate for it, and to me it seems like the truck is expecting me to go deeper into the pedal than I do; fluid levels are good. I’m hoping this might be as simple as resetting the computer, or a reflash, but then again I won’t claim to know much about how that technology works, or if that could even contribute.

Obviously I can take it to the dealership, but wanted to see if any of you guys have experienced anything similar. I don’t like turning my truck over to the dealership, but that may be a pill I have to swallow and definitely will if this might lead to bigger problems, or already is. I plan on lifting and putting 35’s on the truck in a month or two and don’t want to take it to the dealership for this kind of problem with those mods.

I did install a Roush Off Road exhaust, no cat mods, but that was after this started.

Thanks for any help.

Hey! Where in East Texas? I'm originally from Longview, npw over South of Fort Worth.

You need to get it to the dealer but they are going to tell you that they can't replicate the problem, if it doesn't do it all the time. I kind of doubt that it is the computer unless it is with a particular set of circumstances each time. I would think it is in the transmission, but a reflash of the computer would be quick and easy and eliminate that possibility. You are wise in getting it looked at before your mods. There is no way that the exhaust could be the cause.

Hey mine does that also! But it does it while im driving smooth, and at about 27 Miles an hour, and 1500RPM's. All it does is shift out of second for a split second, and drop down to 1st. It all started after I took my truck in to get the computer recalibrated for a recall. The recall was for the Flex Fuel F150's. It had something to do with getting the computer to recognize when it needed to burn more fuel, or less fuel. But ever since then, its been doing that. I called Ford and they said it could be a computer shift error, or my shift sensor might be going bad. They said to bring it in, and they'd take a look at her. Just never got to it. So it could be one of those things possibly.

Hey Jim. I'm from Atlanta. I moved out near the Dallas area (Wylie) a few years ago chasing work, but East Texas is home. I'm hoping to get back that way within a couple years.

I appreciate your response.

Good luck with yours Hespen.

Are you sure that it's doing it on the 2-3 shift and not the 3-4 shift?

I had a similiar problem with my tranny a few months back. The dealership was unable to replicate the problem so they installed what they called a "flight recorder" in my truck. This module went under the driver seat. The module had a cable with a one button remote at the end of it. I drove around with it for a while and when the tranny kicked, I would push the button. This module supposedly records info apporoximately 15 seconds back, to see what exactly your tranny was doing. Needless to say they replaced the whole freakin tranny. It might be worth asking about it though

I appreciate the info. I'll see if my dealership can set me up with one.

Yup, that recorder is a good thing to have. A friend of mine who rebuilt the tranny has a similar one that tells you every function on the tranny, it just won't tell you if something mechanical is broke. It'll say temps, pressures, but my mom's Explorer had similar problems, it was electrical and was adjusted or a sensor replaced.
