Tranny or something else?

tonight driving to a friends house i heard a "clunking" kind of noise when taking off from a dead stop. it was very faint. Would not happen when rolling down the road, nor when i stomp on it from a roll or dead stop. only when i ease into it. Im thinking 3 things.

any help would be appreciated, hopefully im just being a hypochondriac

1. torque converter
2. Drive shaft or something needs greased
3. tranny (valve body?)

"2. Drive shaft or something needs greased"- check the universal joint for excessive play.

went out to the truck and checked U-joints in park no movement up, down, side to side. Rechecked in neutral front U joints near tranny did move up and down slightly, the rear of the shaft was solid as a rock.

since im guessing i need new U joints in the front (may as well do the back too since the shaft is off when i do it) What U- joints do you guys recommend for these trucks? and if i take it to a shop (i have no means to press in the joints) how much shop time am i looking at? hour? two? all day?

id go to autozone and get the duralast gold u-joints. $10 a pop and nothing wrong with them.

also, u-joints is something anyone can do in just about any garage. the new u-joints dont need to be pressed in.
