torque converter replacement help
so the shop quoted me $625 to replace the torque converter and "tune-up" the tranny.
they said they didnt even know for sure if that is what is causing my problem.
the 1999...4R70W with 165K miles is starting to have a shimmy that accures mostly in over-drive. that shifting has become a little sloppy sometimes also. i have to drive this truck across the country in a couple of months so i need the tranny to get fixed or go out all together so it can get replaced..
anyone have any ideas, suggestions, .... an extra tranny.....

I have a TC but it's not doing you any good in Alabama...lol
Let them do it for $625 and hope they don't find more wrong with it wile it's out.
For a new or rebuilt tranny,,,,plan on paying between $1500. to $2500.

does it sound to you like the TC is what the problem is? i was considering just getting the tranny flushed in hopes that would either fix the problem or cause it to go out completely so i can get a new one. if the flush doesnt work, then i just wasted $200. either way, i need dependable transportation.
I would start by replacing all the fluid in the transmission and torque converter with Mercon V, replacing the filter and see what happens. This sounds like another case of torque converter shudder.
Try this to see if it stops the shudder. While you are accellerating lightly put your foot on the brake jsut enough to turn on the brake lights. If the shudder stops then it's the converter. A fluid change may fix that and it may not.
If the shudder doesn't go away with the brake then I would start to look at simple things like the EGR and making sure the MAF is clean.

If it is TC shudder, which is pretty common, dump a bottle of FORD friction modifier in it intended for traction lok rear ends. I had the same problem with an 03 Excurion - it eliminated it.
This is also a very, very common fix for LTD's.
