4R70W fluid level HELP

I changed my fluid this weekend in my 01 supercrew. I drained the torque coverter and dropped the pan and changed the filter. When i went to go add more fluid in I put in 10 quarts of Mercon V and started it to check the levels. I didnt even read on the dipstik, so i added another quart and took it for a spin around the block and then brought it back to the shop to again check the fluid levels, it still didnt even show up on the dipstick, so i added a 12th quart, when i went to start it up again to check the levels it is a little bit over the hot mark. I took my truck and drove it approximatly 15 miles down the highway so i could be sure that it would cycle through all the gears and it still is reading above the hot mark. What should I do, is this okay being alittle full or should i drain some out??

Also when i checked the fluid the first time after adding 10 quarts, i started it up and when i did fluid was leaking out of somewhere above the pan, but not out of the pan seal or the torque converter where i had drained it from. Is this normal??

If anyone can help me any info would be great thank you.

I would suck some out to bring it back down to the FULL mark.

What you did was overfill it drastically - you should not dump 10 quarts into a dry tranny. You put in 5 quarts, start it, let it idle for a minute to fill the converter. Then add more a bit at a time, repeating. Don't put it in gear till you have put 10 total in, and don't drive it till it's full, just sit there idling in gear to warm it up.

With the engine off ATF can't flow into the torque converter. 10 quarts is enough to fill it to the top, and enough to let it run out of the vent on top. Other than making a mess it won't hurt anything.

A better way to do it is to add 6 quarts, and then run for one minute. Shut the engine off and add four more quarts. Run for two minutes, moving the shifter to every position for at least 5 seconds, then check the level and top it off.

That's what I was wondering - whether it simply was overflowing out a vent.

yeah hearing that does make me feel a lot better, thanks Mark. But this evening when i left class i went out and started my truck, which had been sitting for about 6 hours, i let it idle for a minute and then checked my dipstick, and it showed that the fluid was right in the middle of the cold mark, so i never did drain any of the fluid out. But earlier today when i drove to school (about 20 miles all highway) i threw in in park and checked it and the dipstick read slightly above the hot mark. so now i am a little confused and now sure what to do.

you should be alright, mines a tad over the mark with 12-13 quarts in it

I didnt have the converter plug so i dont know exactly how much came out, i did pull the valve body down which drained half of the converter out

The only *accurate* check is with it hot. "Slightly" over should be okay.

when it is hot it reads about a 1/4 inch above the hot mark, but you guys think that its okay like that? And that reading is checking it immediatly after driving 20 or so miles down the highway.

That much is probably not going to cause a problem. If it does get too high the rotating parts in the trans can whip the fluid into a foam, and then bad things happen.

yeah with the fluid level being a bit high when its hot does bother me, but i think i will just let it be because the truck is running and shifting just fine. I would guess at max i am about a half a quart to much.

hey patman, you had said that your fluid level was also high, how much over the hot mark does your dipstick read?? yeah the max fluid quanity is 13.9 but i dont think that i got 13.9 out of it when i drained it because i only drained the torque coverter and dropped the pan.
