When shifting into reverse the transmission has a delay and then a small shake like it kicked into gear harder then normal. maybe low on fluid?

My '97 5.4L does the same thing, only it's getting a lot worse. Its been doing it since I bought it not too long ago, I asked the guy I bought it from when he last serviced the tranny and he said never and the truck has 165k on it...
I bought the transgo shift kit, a filter and Amsoil synthetic ATF. I'm hoping this will prevent me from having to buy a new Transmission. It won't even reverse any more unless I am on perfectly flat ground or I'm reversing down hill. Even when it does reverse I have to barley press the gas to keep it from feeling like the transmission is ripping out.
