I've been having a strange problem latley... I have a '00 F150 5.4L with a 4R70W trans and 72k miles. What's happening is sometimes when I come to a stop at a light the truck starts to shake and by easing off the brake pedal it jerks forward a couple of times without touching the gas and then smooths out again. It feels like some sort of trans problem? I used to have a really slow 1 to 2 shift but I added a bottle of lucas tranny fix and it made that a lot better, but did not do anything for the shaking. Ideas as to what could be causing this?

 

When was the last time you did a complete fluid change?

 

Well as a tech, I say STAY AWAY FROM ALL TRANS ADDITIVES, but that is me. But maybe you should try a trans flush. Sounds like a TC problem though, maybe a good fluid change is in-line.

 

I have only had the truck for a few months and have replaced most of the fluids, but have not done the trans yet. What do you guys reccomend? Replacing all of the fluid and filter? How do I go about getting the fluid out of the converter?

 

Yes a dealer flush job would be great but it's up to you. There is a inspection plug you can remove and rotate the engine by hand to find the drain plug for the TC.

 

Any special way to refill the TC once it is flushed? Or just pour all the fluid in thru the dip stick?

 

The torque converter fills through the dipstick. Don't put all the fluid in at once, it will come out of the vent. Add half of the fluid and let it run 1 minute and shut it off. Then add another four quarts and run for another minute. Then warm it up, moving the shifter to each position at least once. Now set the final level with it idling in park.
