Question about fluid change
Question about fluid change
I have a 2007 F150 STX Supercab 2WD with the 4.6L V8. I plan on dropping my pan and just replacing the fluid that is in it. My question is, approximatley how much fluid does my pan hold? Is a Mercon V good for the new fluid? Also, on the pan it says the gasket is reuseable. I have never seen that before. Will it work okay?
I think the pan holds around 5-6 qts, but not sure. I have a drain pan that has qt markings in it which comes in handy for stuff like that.
Just me personally, I am not a fan of replacing just what's in the pan. The pan holds about 1/3 the quantity of the whole system. I like to swap out all of mine. But like I said, that's just me.
My personal recommendation again...if you're only going to do what's in the pan then I'd go with Motorcraft Mercon V. I wouldn't go with a quality synthetic (like Amsoil ATF) unless you were going to swap it all out.
Your gasket is definately re-useable. I've re-used mine three times in almost 6 years/80,000 miles and never the slightest hint of a leak.

I would love to have everything changed but since I am doing it myself I figure changing whats in the pan a couple times will be better than nothing. I am going to change whats in the pan and then run it for a good 5k miles and then do it again. I will do this about 3 times and then hold off for another 20k or so miles.
The gasket is reusable. Consider changing the filter if you drop the pan. Plan on 5 quarts to refill. Any fluid approved (or recommended) Mercon V will work. With your truck being an 07 a pan drop is fine, no need to flush. In fact, a drain/refill/new filter every 30K is a great maintenance plan.
An oil extractor or hand pump makes dropping the pan much less messy by emptying the pan of fluid first and is a great way to do drain/fills without dropping the pan.
Installing a drain plug in the pan makes drain/fills easier than changing the engine oil. If you're pulling the pan off installing a drain plug while its off is the way to go.

Did my Fluid change today. I ended up getting about 4.5 quarts out so thats what I put back. In the pan was the small yellow looking plug thing. Anyone know what that is?

That is a plug used by the factory for the fill stick that gets knocked into the pan. You don't need it.
