04', reverse will not engage?

Got stuck in my driveway last night thanks to a 4' tall snow drift. Dug out a little with a shovel and then rocked it back and forth a few times to get it rolling. Was almost out when I put it back in reverse one last time and all that happened was the engine reved. The forward gears all work fine, but as soon as you slide it into reverse... nada, just sits there reving to the moon. Is my whole transmission shot or could it be something else? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Chances are the reverse clutch didn't enjoy the rocking. If it doesn't come back when the trans cools off, it's toast.

Just peachy. I tried it again this morning and nothing, so it's probably toast, and only has 42,000 babied miles on it. Wonder how much it will cost to have the reverse rebuilt?

I'm sure $$$$$$ is right, but has anyone had a partial rebuild done? I'm taking it in later this afternoon for a quote and don't want to get totally hosed by the stealership. They have done all right by me in the past, but I've always know what something should cost, this I have no idea.

Almost all of the cost of a rebuild is labor. All the parts (if I remember correctly) are less than $200, not counting the torque converter. Once the trans is out and opened up it really doesn't pay to only rebuild reverse. Bite the bullet and do the whole thing now, or you have a good chance of doing this again soon.

Thanks Mark, I will probably bite the bullet and do the whole song and dance to prevent future mishaps.

Well... after basically rebuilding the whole transmission and getting a 12,000 mile/12 month warranty, I snuck out the stealership door this morning for $1654. I still think it sucks that it went out with only 42,000 miles on it. I guess that will learn me not to rock a automatic back and forth.
