You confusing me - why in the hell do you want to mix everything up like that . You 'll prolly be alright. That Mercon Fluid is more less low grade nowadays.

I would just drain whats in the pan if that's what your wanting to , your not stating WHY you want to do this , so I'm guessing . If you have Mercon presently in your trans and want to change your fluid, then yes use Mercon V .

Mobile 1? - WTF make up your mind lol !!

WHY!!

Maybe someone else will try to answer you now that I just thru something down

Mercon and Mercon V should not be mixed. You may convert the 4R100 to Mercon V but it should be completely flushed. Same goes for a change to a Mercon/Mercon V compatible synthetic such as Mobil 1.

mercon vs mercon V

Hi ! here's something that would really pissed you off. I had my ATF replaced 2 weeks ago and they used mercon. So I had it replaced at Ford. Guess what ? Its a good thing I went there to check the ATF they are also using is mercon. They told me that for models 1998-2004 its okay. They will only prohibit the use of mercon on 2005-2007 f150. They said that the reason why they do not initially use mercon V is because many of their comebacking customers are complaining with the cost. So to cope up with it they will use under specified ATF and Gear oil too. Its either there's not muh differrence between the two that's why they are willing to take the risk of a breakdown or they just don't care.

But I still love my F150 1999 xlt

Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle ATF is Mercon V approved and will mix with other ATFs. Been doing regular drain/fills in my '02 for years with it, no problems. Just stay away from from fluid labeled only Mercon. Any fluid meeting the Mercon V (or newer Mercon SP) spec is fine.

Barry, your dealer is simply trying to get rid of all its old Mercon. It's no longer being made and Ford put out a TSB stating that *all* Mercon apps may now use Mercon V.

Be careful here. I don't know all the details and what years are what, but some applications that require mercon you can not use Mercon V. The seals are not always compatible and will leak.

I do know the details.

Ford changed MERCON V recently to make it compatible with the older transmissions that used MERCON. Then they dropped MERCON.

That means - if in doubt and need to switch something over, make sure you get Mercon V from new stock. Of course, you can use "universal" fluid that meets both specs - which most synthetics are.

Am I correct, Mark?

MERCON V changed over a year ago. There may still be some old fluid around, but all of it on the shelves now should be the new MERCON V.

Because they didn't.

MERCON V changed before Ford said it was good to use in the MERCON transmissions.

As for what percentage of MERCON V is synthetic, that depends on what company is making that fluid. For example, Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is MERCON V and is 100% synthetic. Other MERCON V fluids have less than 100% synthetic.

I work for a Ford dealer and the final word is it is ok to use MerconV in any vehicle with Mercon in it. THe one you DO NOT mix is Mercon SP. That's for the new Torque shift transmissions. Bad things happen when you put that in the older units.
