Fresh oil on top side of M5OD
2001 4.6L 4x4 w/ M5OD, Hurst short throw, Royal Purple ATF, 78k mi. Had slave cylinder replaced at 40 - 45k or so.
I've been having some issues with my truck lately and one thing I've really noticed is that I can't get the damn thing to go into 1st. at at light from neutral without making repeated attempts by going down toward 2nd. then back up into 1st. I've gotten pissed and tried slamming it into first a few times and it crunches on in there finally. This of course has happened occasionally over the years and the Hurst + Royal Purple has helped keep it to a minimum.
Well, I just happened to get under there with the creeper tonight and to my horror, saw fresh oil on the rear driver's side of the tranny, on the plate where the 4x4 stick linkage is, and all up on the top side of the tranny. The passenger side is bone dry, as is the transfer case. The majority of the wetness is all up around the area the stick goes down into the tranny, about 6" forward of that, and all behind it.
If you're at all familiar with the Hurst setup, there is a 3 hole gasket that goes here, but I used a brand new one when I first installed, and I have second one in the package with new hardware. I'm considering trying the new one, but have no idea how or why it would fail in the first place.
I know there are some rubber plugs on the top side that have been known to shrink and cause misting, but I can't see or feel these at all. I do have a seeping headgasket or two, but the front most part of the tranny seems to be dry, so I don't think it's migrated from all the way up there. Any ideas?

It is normal for the assembly to leak when you reef on it. The Hurst assembly sticks up about 3 inches higher than the OEM assembly that sits flush. That adds leverage on the gaskets. If you take it apart you will most likely notice that it has come loose allowing the oil to leak. Take it apart and reassemble it. I use silicone to help seal it. On mine one of the long bolts that holds the gold colored housing to the black adapter base plate stripped. Make sure the stoppers are properly adjusted. If they are out of adjustment that can stop the lever from going far enough to engage a gear. Then we tend to reef on it to push it into gear etc..........
