Self Tranny Service

04 f150 5.4

I bought fluid and filter to do this myself but found my torque converter does not have a drain plug. I want a total fulid change, not just the pan. My buddy told me to unhook the tranny line going into the tranny cooler, start the truck and let it run until it stops pumping fluid and starts pumping air. He said as long as the tranny isnt in gear it wont hurt it. Is this true, has anybody else used this method? THanks for any info!
