4R70W over full

I changed the tranny fluid in my truck. Dumped the torque converter, removed the pan, changed the filter, put it back together. But i put the recomended amount of fluid in (don't remember what that is off hand) and it shows over full on the dipstick.

My guess is that it is less than a quart over. I figure the tranny cooler might of held some fluid and that is where the extra came from. But I'm only guessing.

Is this a big concern? Will it hurt anything?

Did you check the level after driving at least a half hour, then idling in park on a level surface? That's the only way to get an accurate reading.

If you did and it's still high you need to get it back down to the right level. If it is overfilled the fluid can get whipped by the rotating parts. That turns it into a foam, and foam can't lubricate. Then bad things happen.

I drove it for about 10 minutes, then checked it on a level or near level (garage floor) surface.

Thanks for the advice. I'll pull the TC plug and let a quart out or so. Then check it and add till I'm up at the proper level.

Yes, remove the dust cover. You probably will have to rotate the engine to find the drain plug. A screw driver on the ring gear, or a socket on the crakshaft pully will turn it.

Yeah, you can drain all but about 2 qts out. So, if you put in the total capacity, you are about 2 qts over. Suck or drain some out.

There's some exceptionally bad advice from one that has no idea how these transmissions work.

im sorry but i used to have a leak and over filled mine alot of times

And i took it too a shop to have it looked at once and they told me
that i cant overfill it to the point of damage.. Because there is some
vent tube or something on the top.. Im just saying what im told and have done.

the place was called Monster Trasmissions.. In 34606 area code or something around 30 miles of that area code

They didn't know what they were talking about. I've seen transmissions destroyed and vehicles burned to the ground because of overfilling.

If the fluid is high enough so that the level is into where the rotating parts are going around the trans will whip the fluid into a foam. Foam can't lubricate, so various things like bushings and bearings don't get lube and get destroyed. Also, foamed fluid takes up a lot more space, so a lot gets forced out of the vent. When the engine is off and everything settles, now the trans will be underfilled.

If the fluid is forced out of the vent it can get on the exhaust, and then you can get a fire.

All in all overfilling is a very bad thing.

Draining the TC and dropping the pan will drain about 12- 12½ qts on a 4r70w.

itimebomb89, if you cant find the plug its because Ford quit putting them in around the 2000 model year. Yours may not have one.

my seal from my t-case and my transmission was bad

like the bolts worked there way out and broke.
so fluid would leak out and at first it seemed like it was the pan on the transmission..so i put a new gaskit in and it was still leaking so it took me like 2-3 months to find were the oil was coming from...

because i did it and it still leaked
then i took it to a shop and it still leaked..
then i just desided to live with it untell it started leaking real bad.
and the people at monstertrans did me good when they seen it...
200 bucks they re did the bolts.. because they were broke inside..
new gaskit and did all the work.. plus fluid. i think they are good people.

but i used to over fill it all the time so i wouldent have to add fluid
If i went 1qt over the fluid would come out.

this happen each time I ever went over...

I do see were your getting at that its something that sould not be done.
But i never had a problem doing it...

Im not going to lie tho my transmission just took a crap tho...
160k miles on it... with 4.56's and 35" tires plus 5.4..

I have done alot of burnouts... towed a dump trailer...
towed my trailer for landscaping all the time...
I romp on it at each light...

I say dont do it if you dont have to/ over fill
But i dont think it caused me a problem

Ford installed the last torque converter drain plug in August, 2001.

torque converter drain plug

so, does anyone know if i can figure out if my torque converter has a plug? just replaced a broken filler tube which had a dime sized hole from where the braket broke off the filler tube. so, i'm thinking some dirt or grit may have entered the tranny through this hole in the filler tube and a tranny service is in order. would be nice to know ahead of time if i'll be able to drain the torque converter, as the "pumping method" of emptying a tranny might be a little advanced for me (plus i'll be working solo)

any help is appreciated.
