insulation inside trany?

I'm getting ready to change the clutch in my 1996 F150's Mazda M5OD 5-Speed trany. I opened the inspection window (removed the rubber plug that is) and to my surprise found whole lot of stuff looking like a house insulation all over the place, behind pressure plate. Is that supposed to be there, or some rodents making a house in a noisy place?
If it is there for a reason - why?
Thanks a lot!

No, it shouldn't be there. It's either what you said or it's failed clutch material.

Yup, I get mice building nests up in the clutch area or basicly everywhere on the equipment parked in the barns.
