trannys made by mazda?
Yes, the 5-speed manual is from Mazda.
Most of Ford's new generation of cars are based off Mazda flatforms, such as the Fusion/Milan/MKZ off the Mazda 6 platform.
Also the Ford Edge and Lincoln crossovers are based on the Mazda 6.
The European spec Ford Focus on the Mazda 3.

bricelittle,
I'm thinking my '98 Lariat SuperCab 5-sp is the same tranny as you've got in your '93. The ratios look familiar. Yeah, I'd say with a 2.73 rear end, you pretty much don't need an OD gear. But think of the flip-side: my truck with the same tranny has a 3.55 rear, and 1st gear is almost too low. From a rolling 5 mph or so, I'll almost always take off in 2nd. First gear is just out of breath too quick. I've actually considered swapping my 3.55 for a 3.08. I don't think I'd lose too much torque, and it seems like it would make it easier to drive. I drive 400 miles a week to work and back, and a higher rear end would also help out at the gas pump. With my gears, at a 70 mph cruise, I'm turning over 2300 rpm in OD. I definitely use my OD 5th, but in town 4th is plenty. It's hard to believe that Ford used to put such high-geared rears in their trucks. I seem to remember an old sales brochure for a pre-'97 F150 that, when you turned to the back to see the tow ratings of the different gears, 2.73 would flat-out say "towing not recommended" or something like that. It must have strictly been for highway use. After the '97's came out, 3.08 was the highest you could get, but the majority got 3.55's, I think. While I wouldn't want to go to a 2.73, I could probably see myself installing a 3.08 if I had any $$.

Yes, the M5OD-R2 used with the 300, 302, 4.2L, and 4.6L is made by Mazda. Not to be confused with the M5OD-R1 used in the ranger/explorer platform.
Ford hasn't made a manual tranny since the early 80s in trucks. Otherwise sourced it to Mazda, ZF, Borg Warner, or New Process.

fordman3, bricelittle has an old I6 - that's a whole different story than yours. The I6 is all low end grunt, our 4.2's and 4.6's need some revs.
I'm quite happy with my 3.55's, that's a good ratio for a 4.2 as a compromise.

Like we were talking about in your other thread, brice, you can have the best of both worlds with a ZF5 conversion - granny low *and* an overdrive, you can prolly just keep those 2.73's if you do that.

for the ZF used (stingy bastard$)
