overdrive flashing
overdrive flashing
I have a 99 f150 5.4L 4x4. The overdrive light started to flash today while going down the road. When sitting still and then started going it shifts fine and down shifting seems fine to. When I take it in and out of overdrive it shifts hard. Also while crusing down the road and get in the gas alittle to say try to pass it shifts hard. Put a sanner on it and it read 1-2. Any suggestion
Flashing O/D light is usually caused by a worn plastic gear on the tail shaft of the transfercase. I have changed mine many times..... takes only a few minutes. Problem is that the new gear fits tight and might clear that o/d light for 1000k or sometimes 3-4 thousand k. never exact just weird. I have been told to get it changed out many times as it could hurt your tranny if it is affecting shifting. Then I have spoken to a number of guys locally who ( if shifting good) have put black tape over the light and never looked back with no issues.. I have changed mine many times and one I only had a road trip (to pick up my R6) for about 2000k return and it started flashing again.
Its annoying. Easy to fix though. If you want the details on how to change it let me know and I can give you a step by step to do it. Its just a matter of dropping the rear driveshaft (4 bolts) and removing the tail section of the transfer case to expose the gear. Pull the old gear off (litterally) and heating the new gear up in atf, and sliding it on the shaft. A bit of silicone and your back in business. Then reverse steps for the driveshaft install.
Oh yeah the gear is $38 here at the dealer so it is inexpensive but when your after changing it a bunch of times it starts to bug you.
Seems this was an issue on 98 and 99 f-150's and to my knowledge ford never "really" fixed the problem.
The newer trucks seem to have a different sensor as the newer transfercases had no provision for the little ballbearing that locks the gear on the shaft. I have mated newer t-cases to older trucks.

Od Light Flashing
I have a 2003 ford f-150 supercrew. Today I noticed the OD (Overdrive) light was flashing. Nothing seemed wrong. It was running good and shifting fine. A little later down the road. I noticed a noise coming from somewhere under the truck. Only when I'm coming to a stop or accelerating between 1st and 2nd gear. I'm not sure whats going on but the OD light is still flashing. Seems like there may be a problem with the tranny? Any ideas what it might be?
