towing capacity

anyone know how i can find out what my trucks towing capacity is? i understand that there were different "packages" at the time it was purchased. I'm the second owner and don't have access to the origional owner. it's 2000 5.4 L 4X4 ext. cab 6.5' bed, there is what i believe is a class III hitch on the back and I think it's factory, also has a 7 pin connecter, not sure if all that was added though. This is my first truck also, not sure where to look for a transmission cooler to see if it has one, below the radiator?? what does it look like. Anyone know if the serial # can reveal the tow capacity?

THANKS!

if you have a factory tow package you have a transmission cooler. this is how much you can tow https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=78435

The tranny cooler looks like a little radiator(similar in size to one on a liquid cooled motorcycle) and is typically mounted under the radiator on the driver's side.

Factory tow packages always come with a 7-pin installed, a tranny cooler, and typically a shorter rear end.

Adding a tranny cooler isn't that big of a deal if you don't have one, and a good idea if you plan to tow or haul loads frequently. A compromise is to add a tranny temp gauge, and it things routinely go above safe, you know to add a cooler.

You can find the manual for your 97-06 truck here
