pinion seal leak

well the other day i got under my truck and noticed there was fluid splattered all over the place. it took a while but i found that i was coming from the pinion. i have to take it and have it repaired. i was wondering it my drop shackles could have anything to do with this. i heard before that they can cause bad pinion angles, but ive didnt know that it happened on the older models. could someone please help me out? i dont want to leave the shackles on if they are going to break something else too.

My pinion seal was leaking when I bought my truck. $175 later and the leak is fixed. The rearend was a quart low (1/3 of capacity) and have no idea how long the previous owner drove it this way. Get it replaced as soon as possible.

The drop shackles won't affect the gears or pinion seal, but they might affect the U-joints & cause driveline vibration.

It takes some special tools & precise procedures to change that seal, so don't attempt it if you're not sure.

That sounds about right. What did he charge you: 1.5 hr. labor + ~$30 in parts?
