4R70W vs AOD (Same Filter and Gasket?)

OK, so I want to change the Tranmission fluid and Filter on my 97 F150, 4.6L, SC, 2WD.

Found the thread where it identifies my tranny. Code on the door is "U", which correlates to a 4R70W. I went to the local parts store and their computer brings up 3 different possilities. The E40D, a C6 and and AOD. Hmmm, I know it isn't a C6. Anyway, since the door code definitely isn't a E40D, I bought the filter for the AOD.

Is this the same filter and gasket?

This will be the last service I'm doing on this truck... Got a New 07, FX4....and love it.

Read the sticky at the beginning of "Transmissions". Also be aware of the correct trans fluid for a 97'.

ok.... jeesh, I thought I was going to just put in what the manual said, which was Mercon.... so now I guess, it should be Mercon V. But since I am not draining the torque converter... at least I hadn't planned on it... is the Mercon V compatibale with what is already in the Tranny?

Anyway, that aside, is the filter and gasket the same?... I had a look underneath, the pan has 14bolts and looks to be about the same shape as the gasket I got. Stamped on the pan it says it is equipped with a re-usable gasket. I'm not sure I want to re-use the old one. Opinions anyone?

Also, what are the torque settings for the pan bolts? I don't want to make them too tight.

4r70w is basicly an electronic beefed up AOD, I'd imagine they are the same, but never had a 70w to compare too.

Use Mercon V fluid!

Why not drain the TC? You have a plug and doing so would change about 15quarts of fluid instead of just 5 from dropping the pan.

K... got the pan off, same filter... woo hoo... got some Mercon V, gonna drain the TC and do the whole thing properly like you suggested. Re-using the pan gasket too, way better than the one that came with the filter.

Jeesh, it takes a long time to drain the TC...

Question: Should I put some Loc-tite on the drain plug on the TC? Or is it necessary?

No Use some thread sealer on the drain plug, don't use loctite.
