trans filter and is this a dealer only item?
can't seem to find one at local parts stores

 

Could it be a permenant filter that is washed and reused? Maybe Quintin or another knowledgeable person will chime in.

 

They are fiber you must replace them. I have gotten them at all local parts stores. Advance part number is FK266 cost is ~$17
Autozone is TF403 I can't get the cost on there new site for some reason.

go to O'Reilly's if there's one near you. I bought one there the other day for $10. Advance was about $18 and Autozone just sucks at everything

 

If you want a Motorcraft filter go to the dealer. They come in a kit with the gasket and usually cost $30-$40. If you're willing to use an after market filter head to NAPA. In my area they supply the independent mechanics and have wide variety of parts on hand unlike AZ or AA.

 

The gasket on the pan is reusable.
there are a couple of holes on the gasket that are smaller than the bolts. These will help hold the gasket in place while you set the pan.
look on the door panel to see the trans type letter or # and tell the parts countertop guy.

 

I have seen no difference in aftermarket filters and OEM filters. They all appear to be made by the same place to me.

Bought a filter today for my '97 4R70W at Ford. Paid $27 for the filter, $3.50 Qt. for MerconV. Oil was cheaper than any parts store around. Imagine that, Licensed motorcraft oil. I paid a little extra for the filter because I wanted to stay with OEM. Changing tomorrow.
