Transmission/Transfer Case Seal Problem

Alright, took my truck for an oil change a week or so back, when they attempted to check my transfer case fluid level, they discovered that my seal was gone and my transmission was now draining into my transfer case. It's a $20 seal which takes 3 or 4 hours to change . . yea, I had a problem choking it down too. Now, I've had the problem fixed and to my knowledge, the guys at my dealership said this type of repair is fairly uncommon, but to satisfy my own curiosity I was wondering if anyone else had had this type of issue with their trucks, and if anyone had any other ideas about what caused it. I as well as my dealers are pretty sure it was just a degradation of the seal due to wear. I haven't had my truck for that long, so I am certain it was the previous owner's problem, but if he did something. I'd like to know what.

Thanks for any replies you got.

the seal was bad and it drained into the transfer case?? ive never seen a seal go bad and not have a noticeable leak. that sounds suspect to me. its possible the case was just overfilled from the pervious owner. if it was draining back to the case like that tranny would be acting strange. slipping etc...

It's not often, but it does happen.

Unhappy Broken transmisson seal

I own a 04, F150 FX4, 5.4 74000 Kms, yesterday 22 Nov 08 I had the engine oil changed, the person changing the oil informed that the trans fluid was low and not showing on the dip stick, he further added that the transfer case was over-filled and this was because a bad seal was causing the trans fluid to leak into the transfer case. I added a quart of Mercon V which brought the trans level up to where it should be. I am very concerned and not too sure what I should do. Any assistance would be very appreciated.

the transfer case has to come off for the seal to be replaced, hence the expense of the repair. Zairrman went through this, i believe.

My Excursion was slipping a little if you were almost at a complete stop and tried to accelerate. If Completely stopped and I moved it was usually fine. Also if I manually shifted no problem. It started to get worse so I had it flushed out and they said the TC was over full. Could this be my problem and not a tranny problem.

I have 2005 Stx f150 and had close to same trouble to much fluid in transfer case but my transmission fluid was full even a little over full there's no leaking anywhere and the guy that was Checking the fluids said that maybe the last guy to service the truck might have. He led the fluid cold and that it might have shown it was low and over added has anyone ever had this happen and not had the seal go bad just push the extra fluid through

Your seal is probably on the way out. Change it before you smoke the trans from not having enough fluid.
