Exclamation Blinking Overdrive Light

Has anyone had this problem before. I went to Fayetteville NC today, thats about 80 miles from my house. When I got near my destanation, I noticed that my overdrive light on my shifter was blinking on and off. I could not get it to stop. When I got to where I was going and turned the truck off and back on, it was back to normal. When I got ready to return home it stayed off for about 30 mins, then it started again. It still seemed to be shifting into 4th gear ok, just now when I brake and the tranny starts to down shift, the truck kinda jerks once before it stops. The overdrive function still seems to work when I engage and disengage the button. I this electrical or what? Help!

Go get it scanned, if you don't have the means, your trans is trying to tell you something, fix it before it gets way out of hand

I unpluged the wire harness of my 4r70w trans and repluged it. The light still came back on. It seems to come on when I hit high speeds. When I cruise it does not come on. I called the dealership and they said that if they hooked it up to the computer that it was no garantee that they could tell were the error code was coming from. For the damn money they are going to charge me they better tell me something.

Before you pay the dealer to scan it, go over to Autozone and see if their free scanner picks up anything.

You can try, but to read the tranny trouble codes, you need a ford scan tool or one of those high tech snap on units.

...depends on WHAT the faults codes actually are....

The basic tools will read the fault codes up to 1000, after that they require "manufacturer-specific" support.

Some tranny codes are in the 700s, some are in the 1700s.

Give the free scan a try, you might get lucky.

Your tranny is trying to tell you something. Probably your 3rd gear is slipping or your torque converter is ready to take a dump and time to get it rebuilt. I am talking from experience here. By the way, many transmission, when they sense a problem, greatly increase oil line pressure to help preserve itself. That is why you feel a jerk when it shifts. Greater line pressure causes that type of shifting. Best of luck.

I will try the Autozone scanner first to see what it says. Then go from there. The dealer that I got the truck from may have it fixed for free. They have been pretty helpful so far. I am glad this happend before I got that supercharger put on. Rangerrick68 how long did your light blink before the tranny quit on you?

your tranny is going, The light just started blinking in my 2001 Super Duty, which I plow with, it started shifting really hard and didn't want to go into overdrive, so I took it to a tranny shop and thats what they said it does when its going

my 98 was blinking when i got over 115 km/hr and then started to clunk when taking off from a set of lights. When i checked my transfer case fluid level it was very low and the rear seal on the tc was leaking bad. I changed the seal and changed the fluid and so far that seams to have fixed the problem....hopefully your problem is as simple as mine was...

good luck.

Get the code off a free scanner and post it here. Don't rely on what the kid at Autozone tells you the code means, most of the time they don't have a clue what they're doing. If there is a Midas near you, bring it there. If you ask they will scan the car for free and typically the people there know a little more about your vehicle.

I have a 97 with the e40d and mine does the exact same thing. I took it too a friends dads tranny shop and he had the truck all day he drove it scanned it and couldn't find anything wrong with the tranny so my guess is its the TQ converter because it seems when im in overdrive it would slip and the rpm will go up 3 to 400 rpms and then back down and thats when the light turns on. Oh and its been like this for the past 5 months now and nothings gotten worse

Get it to a tranny shop as soon as you can. Had the same light on my 4.6L 2001 SuperCrew (55,000 miles) and within a month I had a small thump sound when slowing down like something was sliding around in the bed. Next thing I know, the tranny ate itself alive and siezed. A bearing race had come apart and the pieces trashed my tranny to the cost of $2600. Cheaper to have it looked at now and be safe.
