Blinking OD Light and P0713 Code
Blinking OD Light and P0713 Code
My 1996 OD Light is blinking. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I took it to a Transmission Shop and they said it read out a code of P0713 - Trans Fluid High Temp Sensor Input. They also said, when the light was blinking, the transmission would not go into overdrive but when it was out, it would.
They cleared the code and told me to drive it a bit to see if it comes back on. If it does, they say they would need to drop the pan and go in to check out this sensor. Some of the other things they mentioned were faulty wiring might be causing the problem. I think they said that is one of the possible causes for this error message.
Anyone have any experience like this? What is the best approach?
Thanks,
Dave

The best approach is to clear the code and see if it comes back. Sometimes they don't.
If it does, it's either a bad sensor or a wiring problem. You'll probably need to remove the pan to diagnose this.

Which transmission model? If you don't know, look on your door label and tell us what the TRANS code is.
P0713 is a electrical fault in the TFT sensor, either an open circuit or a line shorted to ground.
It might be as simple as reseating the transmission's electrical connector, resetting the PCM, and retesting.
It could also be a faulty sensor, an internal transmission wiring harness fault, a vehicle wiring harness fault, or a faulty PCM. The service manual has a step-by-step procedure.
Good luck. If you need anything else, I'll be back Tuesday night or Wed (maybe)....

I've gone thru heck and back with this same problem and mine's still not fixed. Rebuilt the tranny, still flashed, replaced T.C. and solenoid pack (again) still flashing. Replaced plugs, wires, oxy sens. air filter, fuel filter, When I turn the truck off and on again, I'm good for awhile but then, you guessed it, od light. I'm out of money right now but as soon as I have a little extra, it's going back to the shop. If you find a fix, PLEASE post it. or give me a rope.

WTF are you doing all that for if you have a P0713 code????????
Or do you simply have an O/D light and never read the code?
You need to 1) identify what year and tranny you have and 2) actually DIAGNOSE the problem so you know whats wrong before replacing any parts.

Thanks, That helped.
Actually, I have an E40D and P1728 trans. slip code and P0172 which lent Ford to beleive it was solinoid pack and T.Conv. This Diag. was done by Gator Ford AFTER the tranny was rebuilt by Brandon Transmission twice.

Since the issues with your truck are completely unrelated to those of the original poster's, a separate thread would have been in order instead of adding to an existing, unrelated thread.....
A slip code is best diagnosed by someone with the proper tools, test equipment, and training who can get their hands on the system and make proper tests. The internet isn't going to be of a great deal of help unless you have specifics about what tests have been conducted and what the results were.

Had the same thing on my F250 SD 7.3 DSL...except several more codes than U R seeing. Drove the Biatch for about 3 mos. w/ light bilnkin' & no damage. Had previously used a piece of electrical tape to cover the damn blinkin' light--sorry guys..old habits die hard!
Anyhow last weekend got a bug up my butt, climbed under & carefully unplugged (1 at a time) both wire harness leads to the trans. There is one on the left and another crosses over the top to the pass. side. Each has about 9 wires on the 15-pin plug.
Suggesting you carefully seperate the harness connectors and spray on some type of electrical contactor cleaner that will leave no lube. WD40 and the Advance Autoparts spray will be ok also. Spray both harness connectors and use a clean paper towel or shop rag to remove excess. You can probably use the business end of the smallest hex=key you've got to clean the inside of the male contacts. Re-assemble the harness connectors--I plugged in & out several times to insure best contact. Once you've done both harness connectors at the trans fire it up & take 'er for a spin. Betting the codes & blink wil no longer be there.
But hey...if they are still present what did you lose other than a few moments of your time? Anyhow beats the hell outa' paying serious $$ to needlessly replace "Sol-A & Sol-B" which is what the trans shop would recommed when the drop the pan.
Good luck & Godspeed!

Thanks Dog, That's something we can both try at least. I originally posted My problem under "1997 and before" models with a heading of "10/97 F150 with blinking OD light" but while looking around saw dgerhard's post asking if anyone had a SIMILAR PROBLEM so I added my 2 cents.
