1990 E4OD, who knows how to mod them?
One of the first years for the big OD.
I suppose the pre-OBDII system has limited control of the tranny, or at least very rudimentary control as no one makes electronic upgrades for this tranny until the OBDII years.
So, what can I do to the OBDI version E4OD?
Like all Ford trannys, the thing shifts fat and lazy... I want lean and mean.
It's better on the tranny and MPG.
How can I safely raise the line pressure?
Anyone familiar with shift kits for this tranny in particular?
Will the later mechanical mods work on my early tranny?
I have seen makers, like BD that cater to diesels, make pressure increasing valves and kits for the later trannys.
I know I just have a 302, but will that diesel E4OD stuff work in my tranny?
Thanks much!
Dave

No one makes mods for it because you can't swap or reprogram an EEC-IV chip. You have to plug in an aftermarket module that "tricks out" the stock system into doing what you want, and not many people build them. The new module is VERY specific to the vehicle it goes in, so they can't sell a bunch of one - each is virtually a custom job, so VERY expensive.
The short answer: buy a new truck.

A factory Tech Valvebody will correct your issues. I would think twice before putting any good parts into a severely worn 90 model transmission. They had alot of failures. The aluminum planets are garbage and all pre97 lockup pistons are as well.

Did you try Baumann? They have valve bodies, hard parts upgrades torque converters and a stand alone transmission control unit for the E4OD:

Like a lot of things Ford does, they kept tweeking this trans until they got it right and then discontinued it. At the least you would want to rebuild the 1990 E4OD to 1995 or newer specs.
