Thanks Hawkpilot!

I don't really have the time so to speak to do the swap myself, trust me I'd be all over it. I called Freedom Ford this afternoon to get a price on a remanufactured unit that comes with a 3yr 75k mile warranty, anyone want to take a guess as to what I was quoted?

$2,795.09

On a different note I left work today and romped it WIDE OPEN up the entrance ramp onto 264W this evening before the fluid got too hot...it pulled strong all the way to 70-75 when I let off of it. Perhaps I'm just imagining that it was slipping? Perhaps I just caught it wrong and wound it up? Tis odd. The SES and OD lights are off FWIW

One day, you'll get on 264 and romp on it, then walk all the way home

I dismissed mine the first couple times it happened. THats why I lost it in the middle of nowhere SC

For the kind of money we are talking about I would call
BC-Automotive and have Darrin build a fully built unit. Theres a major difference in upgrading the number and quality of the frictions inside the unit. Alot of the problems with slippage inside these trucks seems to come fromt he torque converter clutch, or at least thats where it starts. A slipping converter can cause the transmission to get very hot very fast. Trucks are what started me building billet converters for these transmissions. Then I went into building smaller diameter high stall converters for cars.

Its too bad the tranny shops make you think you have to be a genius to rebuild one. I overhauled a Ford A4ld tranny a few years ago, never done one and all the parts cost $200. A torque converter was an additional $150. there was no rocket science in there. I made a clutch pack compression tool out of a bearing remover. Took my time and found a book and by god the thing shifted beautiful. replaced all the solenoids, clutch packs, and cleaned the valve body asssembly. With digital cameras it can all be recorded by piece to remember where those little ***** and pistons go. Seals were a breeze. Best price I was quoted was $2400 at the time. Even replaced the pump gears. But it does take patience and time the first time. I talked to a independent locally and he said he has a guy that rebuilds 4 to 6 a day. He pays him by the piece and if one returns he has to pay back. The guy is rich and the boss is elated. There really isnt any difficult stuff, just cleanliness and patience. Tranny shops make a lot of money.....

Quite possible.

IF, big IF I did it myself I'd have to buy another trans, rebuild it and then swap them out. I don't think I could do it in a day (could I?). I also don't want to be without a ride during the rebuild although having to pay for a rental car would likely motivate me to get it done quicker.

Any tips on rebuilding one myself? How much would it cost to replace the hard parts and add a disc or two?

Although rebuilding a transmission may not be rocket science...nothing is EVER as easy as it is on Xtreme 4x4 on spike. I found out that they actually do everything twice, before they film it. Never judge speed by what they do on that show lol my friend and I tried no good. Those highways do get pretty lonely in SC, ESPECIALLY when you have to go to the little boys room lol...Thats when the temperature suddenly gets warmer in the cab and you are praying to see a 1 mile to next rest stop sign lol

Once you have all the proper tools and know how to use them rebuilding these transmissions isn't too bad. Just gonna cost more in tools to do one than it would cost to get it done.

I'm gonna give it a shot as soon as this trans decides to jump ship..It's been slipping at takeoff for a long time now. I've done things here and there in an effort to get past this drama. Well, same ole -same ole as far as that goes.. It doesn't slip at all for a couple months and just as I get my hopes up - The freakin thing starts slipping again !! The same slip every time (from stop). I don't think this trans has slipped at all past first gear.

Anyway, The plan is - when she finally goes down for the count, I'm going to hit that "carpart.com " site and roll the dice on used one . Many times, I've searched that site and have found what I was after , there seams to be quite a few E4OD'S for sale within driving distance, lately....

I figure going that rout and if I luck out and get a good used one , I'll be able to start rebuilding mine. (or attempting to) almost right away.

Also, I hope I can rent some of the tools needed, if it's possible.. It might be difficult finding these tools for rent , lol ... I still have some checkin around to do there .

Good Luck with the project Pony - If you go that route..

Well I lost OD today. :o Said to myself "Self, it's 30* outside, I have places to be, and family to meet. Fawk it." I turned OD off and limped that ***** home @ 3700rpm in D.

Ford wants $3500- $4000 for a reman, instsalled. I'm going to call a local shop tomorrow to see what else I can do without getting azzraped by FoMoCo.

Just a thought but have you looked at anything like this. It's not cheep but it's built and should outlast the life of the truck.

Well that would have been nice to know about provided I didn't have to have a new trans or at least an overhaul RFN. :o I'd love a 4R100, but I have the 4R70W now, I can't just swap one for the other can I? Wouldn't it require a tuner or PCM reprogramming to control it?

All that aside I have 107k on the truck and stock transmission right now, if I can get that much more out of it I'll be happy, althoguh I do think it should have lasted a little longer.

Hey look at that! I was in a bit of a rush this morning and missed that. Now this is interesting, going to delve a little deeper into this. Thanks again for the info!

EDIT: Okay if I buy this unit, how much of a PITA is it going to be to swap it out myself? I've pulled an engine and trans before, but never pulled one out from a vehicle with the engine left in place, nor have I ever messed with a transfer case before. Assuming that I had a bro or two come over to help muscle things around can I do this in a couple hours? A day? I'm fairly profficient with a wrench but is there anything I should watch out for?

I tried to e-mail them but they're having server issues.

HI!... Well JMC and I can get my 4R70-W out of my truck in about 35 minutes but I'm also a 4X2 and we use the hoist at ROTAN.
